It wasn't supposed to end this way for Mike Gundy coaching his alma mater. For more than 20 years, he was the leader of Oklahoma State football, but he's now on his way out. Rumors had been flying that Gundy was going to get fired and that news just came in.

According to insider Pete Thamel, Oklahoma State has indeed decided to part ways and make a move here. It felt like the writing was on the wall after the Cowboys were taken down 69-3 in Eugene and then things were followed up with a stunning home loss to Tulsa on Friday night:

Oklahoma State football has reportedly fired Mike Gundy on Tuesday

Earlier this week, Gundy was asked about the speculation that he could be on his way out of town. He responded by saying that he was going to keep on giving his all. At the same time, he added that he wasn't going to discuss any questions regarding his job security moving forward.

As it turns out, the university decided that now was the time to make a change. It wasn't long ago that the Cowboys were competing for a Big 12 title, but the 2024 campaign appeared to set things over the top among the fanbase in terms of them wanting a change to be made.

The Cowboys went 3-9 on the year, which was totally unacceptable. After turning things around with his coaching staff and adding transfers, the hope was that Oklahoma State would find a way to revive the program and get things back to where it needed to be under Gundy's direction.

Instead, the Cowboys are 1-2 on the year and the home loss to Tulsa proved to be the last straw. Gundy finishes his time with Oklahoma State with 170 wins to his name. He'll always be a Cowboys legend and he provided everyone with unforgettable press conferences. Unfortunately, posting wins consistently evaded him in recent years and it has led to Oklahoma State making this tough call.
