Week 5: Home vs. Baylor (Oct. 2)

Though OSU dominated Baylor after the inception of the Big 12 in 1996, the Bears have now taken five of the last seven games from the Cowboys. OSU defeated Baylor 42-3 in the 2020 regular-season finale, powered by running back Dominic Richardson’s 23 carries for 169 yards and three touchdowns. It was the second-highest rushing mark in a game in school history for the Bishop McGuinness product, behind only Thurman Thomas.

Baylor will almost assuredly be better in 2021 in head coach Dave Aranda’s second season, especially considering that some key players are returning from injury (such as linebacker Terrel Bernard) after last year’s 2-7 mark. OSU, in the meantime, might be looking ahead to their next matchup — a road trip against Texas.

Final Score: Baylor 37, OSU 35 (4-1, 1-1 Big 12)

Week 7: at Texas (Oct. 16)

OSU will be coming off a Week 6 bye before its road trip to Austin. For many Cowboys fans, it’s difficult to suppress the nightmarish memories of Halloween night last year — OSU was leading before Texas scored the go-ahead touchdown in the fourth quarter and eventually won in overtime, 41-34. The Cowboys outgained the Longhorns by 243 total yards, gained 15 more first downs, and had the home crowd behind them, only to lose their second in a row.

Texas will have a slew of talented playmakers to replace last year’s stars like quarterback Sam Ehlinger under new head coach Steve Sarkisian. This is the toughest test yet for OSU in 2021, but the Cowboys have won big games in Austin before.

Final Score: OSU 35, Texas 31 (5-1, 2-1 Big 12)
