Texas Tech head coach Joey McGuire announced that redshirt freshman quarterback Will Hammond will make his second career start this weekend when the Red Raiders host Oklahoma State.
The decision comes after a week of uncertainty surrounding starting quarterback Behren Morton, who has been listed as questionable while dealing with lingering injuries. ESPN’s Pete Thamel reported that Morton is expected to be available if necessary, marking a slight improvement from last week’s status, but McGuire made it clear that Hammond will once again get the first snap.
Hammond made his first career start in last week’s 26-22 loss to Arizona State, which was Texas Tech’s first defeat of the season. While he experienced some growing pains, completing 22 of 37 passes for 167 yards with two touchdowns and one interception, Hammond showed poise and flashes of the arm talent that made him a highly regarded recruit and the threat with his legs that makes him such a dangerous weapon for this Red Raider team even without Morton.
A former four-star prospect in the Class of 2024, Hammond has appeared in all seven of Texas Tech’s games this year, an unusually high workload for a backup quarterback. He’s completed 60 of 94 passes (63.8%) for 578 yards, six touchdowns, and three interceptions, while also showcasing his mobility as a dual-threat option having 5 rushing touchodwns on his 2025 resume as well.
His breakout moment arguably came in relief against Utah, when Morton exited with another injury. Facing one of the nation’s toughest defenses, Hammond displayed command, toughness, and the confidence that has impressed the Red Raider coaching staff behind the scenes.
Texas Tech believes Hammond has the tools to handle the pressure again this week. His strong arm allows the offense to stretch the field, while his athleticism gives defenses something extra to worry about. Coaches have encouraged him to stay aggressive, pushing the ball vertically when opportunities arise, but also to play “within the system.”
Against an Oklahoma State team that has struggled to find consistency this season, Hammond won’t need to be perfect. If he can manage the game, take calculated risks, and keep the offense on schedule, the Red Raiders should be in position to take care of business in Lubbock.
While his debut didn’t end in victory, Hammond’s composure and upside have given Texas Tech fans plenty to be excited about. Now, with another week of first-team reps under his belt, the young quarterback has a chance to turn potential into production and help the Red Raiders bounce back in a big way.
