Oklahoma State basketball is on the rise, and a big part of that momentum is the program’s recently secured top 10 recruiting class for 2026 — a milestone years in the making. Head coach Steve Lutz recently opened up about the philosophy behind this achievement, emphasizing that building such a highly ranked class isn’t just about landing commitments. It’s about consistent care, relationship-building, and creating a culture where recruits feel valued and understood.

Recruiting Is a Long-Term Investment

Lutz explained that recruiting isn’t simply a sprint to sign papers; it’s a long-term investment. The hard work comes not just in convincing talented high school players to join Oklahoma State but in staying present for them throughout the process. Showing recruits how they fit into the team’s development plan and culture goes a long way in making them comfortable when it’s decision time.

It’s not just about what happens on signing day. It’s about building trust and demonstrating to these kids and their families that we have a plan for their growth — not just as basketball players, but as young men. That consistency and care over time makes all the difference. This is a mantra that Oklahoma State basketball seems to be abiding by in a new era for this program under Lutz.

Associate head coach James Miller echoed those sentiments, highlighting the years of effort that go into recruiting top talent.

"“You recruit these guys for years, especially the high school guys, you recruit these guys for two or three years,” Miller told reporters last week. “You put in a ton of time and energy, and you make sacrifices not being with your family, going to see them play, and that's what we sign up for. That's our job. Like, we understand that. But when a kid says that he's coming to Oklahoma State, or a kid that you've developed a relationship with, we celebrate that success, because it's really hard to get good players.”"

Momentum Building for the Future

The commitment from both Lutz and his staff to these long-term relationships appears to be paying off. The Cowboys have secured commitments from two high-level four-star recruits in the 2026 class — a significant step for the program, which hadn’t seen a highly ranked recruiting class in years.

This momentum could have ripple effects, setting the stage for continued recruiting success in the future. As Oklahoma State builds on this foundation, the program’s trajectory is clear: sustained effort, genuine care, and a focus on development are the keys to competing at the highest levels.

Building a Culture That Attracts Talent

With this approach, Lutz and his staff are not only building a talented roster but also forging a culture that attracts players who want to be part of something special — a culture that could put Oklahoma State basketball back among the nation’s elite for years to come.
