Flores Out, QB Spot Wide Open

Oklahoma State’s quarterback room has taken yet another unexpected turn. Interim head coach Doug Meachem confirmed this week that starting quarterback Zane Flores is unlikely to participate in this week’s game, leaving the Cowboys without both of the quarterbacks who were at the top of the depth chart to start the season. Flores, who has shown flashes of talent but struggled with consistency, is dealing with an upper-body injury. His absence adds more uncertainty to a team already fighting through adversity on the offensive side of the ball.

With Hauss Hejny also still recovering from injury and expected to need another week or two before being back to full strength, the quarterback job is suddenly wide open. Meachem made it clear that the position is up for grabs and that no decision has been made ahead of practice this week.

Jackson Brings Experience and Athleticism

One of the leading candidates to step in is Sam Jackson V, a transfer from Auburn with experience at the Power Four level. Jackson has been used in a two-quarterback system alongside Flores this season, bringing a change-of-pace element thanks to his dual-threat ability. His background as both a quarterback and wide receiver gives Oklahoma State a unique look that has kept defenses on edge in recent weeks.

However, should Jackson be asked to take on the full-time starting role, the playbook would likely need significant adjustments. His game is built around athleticism, improvisation, and mobility, which could force the Cowboys to lean more heavily on option plays, rollouts, and designed quarterback runs. While he may not fit the mold of a traditional pocket passer, Jackson’s versatility and dynamic skill set make him a compelling option for the starting job.

Bowen Gets His Shot Earlier Than Expected

Also in the mix is redshirt freshman Banks Bowen, who has quickly gone from developmental prospect to potential starter. Not many expected Bowen to see meaningful game action this early in his career, but the situation has fast-tracked his opportunity. Coaches have praised Bowen’s maturity and calm presence in the huddle, traits not often seen in young quarterbacks still adjusting to the college game.

What Bowen lacks in experience, he may make up for in poise and preparation. Still, he has yet to see extended action when the pressure is highest, and how he responds when the “bullets are flying,” as Meachem put it, remains to be seen. This week’s practices will be key in determining whether he’s ready to take the reins or if the staff leans on the more seasoned Jackson.

A Decision Looms Or a Two-QB Solution?

For now, the coaching staff is keeping its cards close to the chest. Meachem emphasized that there is no current leader in the quarterback race, and that practice performance will dictate who earns the start. It’s a true competition, and the Cowboys are looking for someone to step up and take control of the offense.

Don’t rule out the possibility that both Jackson and Bowen see time under center this weekend. With Flores, the Cowboys had already shown a willingness to use a two-quarterback system, mixing in Jackson to add variety and unpredictability. A similar approach could be in play again, allowing Oklahoma State to tailor packages to each quarterback’s strengths while keeping opposing defenses off balance.

An Unpredictable Week Ahead

As Oklahoma State enters a crucial week of preparation, the quarterback position remains the biggest question mark. The Cowboys need someone to step forward whether that’s the athletic veteran in Jackson or the poised young Bowen. Either way, the opportunity is there, and with the depth chart in flux, the pressure is on to make the most of it.

The coming days will reveal who’s ready to lead this team and whether Oklahoma State will find its answer at quarterback from within an unexpected place.
