As Oklahoma State’s coaching search quietly begins to take shape, one name has quickly risen to the forefront of speculation, Baltimore Ravens offensive coordinator Todd Monken.
According to Pete Nakos of On3, the Cowboys have begun “preliminary conversations” as part of their national search to replace longtime head coach Mike Gundy. However, the program does not plan to conduct official interviews until sometime in November to set them up for a December hire. While the process is still in its early stages, Monken’s name continues to surface as a potential top target.
Ties to Stillwater
Monken isn’t a stranger to Oklahoma State. He’s served in Stillwater twice during his coaching career with the first as passing game coordinator and wide receivers coach from 2002 to 2004, and later as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach during the 2011 and 2012 seasons.
His second stint helped launch one of the most explosive offenses in college football, featuring standout quarterback Brandon Weeden and star receiver Justin Blackmon. That success laid the foundation for Monken’s reputation as one of the brightest offensive minds in the game.
A Proven Track Record
Since leaving Oklahoma State, Monken has built an impressive résumé across both college football and the NFL. He’s served as offensive coordinator for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Cleveland Browns, and now the Baltimore Ravens.
In between NFL stops, Monken helped guide Georgia to back-to-back national championships in 2021 and 2022 as the Bulldogs’ offensive coordinator. His balanced, pro-style system has been praised for its adaptability and effectiveness, something that would fit well in the Big 12.
Speculation, Not Certainty
At this point, though, all talk surrounding Monken’s candidacy is purely speculative. There are no confirmed reports linking him directly to Oklahoma State’s opening, and the program has kept a tight lid on its early search process.
Still, with Monken’s history in Stillwater, proven offensive acumen, and potential availability after the NFL season, the dots are easy for analysts to connect.
For now, Oklahoma State appears content to take its time as it navigates one of the most important hires in program history. Until official interviews begin in November, the Monken chatter, along with several other familiar names, will likely remain just that: chatter.
