3. Maryland Terrapins

Result: 71-70 Loss

Opponent Seed in NCAA Tournament: 6

The Maryland Terrapins shocked the Cowboys when they got the best of them in College Park. Weirdly enough, the Cowboys might not have ended up losing this game if senior forward Mitchell Solomon had not scored on his own basket. In effect, that was the game-winning basket for the Terps.

UMD’s star point guard Melo Trimble ended up scoring the actual game-winning shot to defeat OK State. This ended up being the second of only two losses for the Cowboys out of Big 12 play.

After a quick exit in the Big 10 Tournament, the Terps claimed a six seed in the NCAA Tournament to face the 11 seed Xavier Musketeers. Many felt like the Terps got a higher seed than they deserved after a bad finish to the regular season and Big 10 Tournament.

OK State takes on UMD’s fellow Big 10 rival in the Michigan Wolverines in the first round on Friday. The Wolverines claimed the seven seed in the Midwest Region and also won the Big 10 Tournament.
