The Oklahoma State athletic program reached a huge milestone, claiming its 400 conference championship in school history yesterday.

With the dominant victory seen by the Oklahoma State wrestling program over the weekend, the Cowboy athletic department claimed its 400 all-time conference championship. That number goes back beyond the formation of the Big 12.

Cowboy basketball has the chance to add one more conference title to that list as they compete in the Big 12 Tournament, starting on March 9. However, according to teamrankings.com, the Pokes have a slim 6.31 percent chance to win the Big 12 Tournament Championship. Those odds give the OK State basketball team the fifth best chance to all ten teams in the Tournament to win the title. Yet, that does not give too much insight into predicting the Big 12 Tournament winner because the Cowboys enter as a five seed either way.

The actual Big 12 title that got the Cowboys to 400 was achieved relatively unchallenged yesterday for head coach John Smith and the OK State wrestling team. They set a record for team points in a Big 12 Wrestling Championship and brought home eight individual conference titles. They’ll look to bring home the 52nd National Title in the school’s history, starting March 16 at the NCAA Championships in St. Louis, MO.

This Big 12 title was the 51st all-time conference championship for OK State wrestling, and the 15th in the Big 12. The wrestling program contributed a huge portion of the 400 conference titles in the school’s history.

The Cowgirl basketball team fell short in the Big 12 Women’s Tournament on Saturday, March 4, as a seven seed. After defeating the Kansas Jayhawks 79-75 in the first round, the no. 12 ranked Texas Longhorns emerged victorious 71-60.

The next Cowboy or Cowgirl program with a chance to claim a Big 12 title besides men’s basketball is the no. 3 ranked Cowgirl equestrian team. They travel to Waco, TX for the Big 12 Equestrian Championships on March 24-25, having to knock off the no. 1 ranked and home favorite Baylor Bears.

With so much success through the 2016-17 academic school year in sports, hopefully OK State can continue their momentum through the remaining schedule for the Spring sports. Cowboy tennis, Cowboy baseball, Cowgirl tennis, and Cowboy golf, all have legitimate shots at bringing home conference championships.

Cowgirl tennis fans get a good look at their first Big 12 competition at the Michael and Anne Greenwood Tennis Center on March 9 in the conference opener against Baylor.

It’s safe to say that if Cowboy basketball brings home the Big 12 Tournament Championship this week, it would suffice for OK State fans for the rest of the 2016-17 athletic calendar.
