The Oklahoma State baseball team got starting pitcher Tyler Buffett’s best effort yesterday in more than seven shutout innings on the mound to defeat the Nebraska Cornhuskers. The final score was 1-0 as the Cowboys wrapped up their first game in the Frisco College Baseball Classic with a huge win.
Center fielder Ryan Sluder scored the only run of the game for the Pokes yesterday on a Nebraska error. Designated hitter Colin Simpson led the Cowboy offense in hits with two but he also struck out twice as well.
Third baseman Garrett Benge saw his offensive hot streak cool down a bit as he went 0-2 with two walks.
The Cowboys did leave nine runners on base yesterday which has been a huge problem for most of the season.
OK State totaled six hits and no errors against Nebraska as it was nice to see the pitching staff have a dominant showing similar to last season’s team.
Cole Hearran and Jonathan Heasley continued Buffett’s shutout through the final 1 2/3 innings of the game. Heasley notched his second save of the season.
Yesterday’s victory moved the Cowboy baseball team to 5-4 on the season. Today they are currently taking on the team that knocked them out of the 2016 College World Series, the no. 15 ranked Arizona Wildcats.
Freshman pitcher Parker Scott got his first career start against the Wildcats today. He’s only pitched six innings during his young OK State career.
The Cowboys could use a victory today to keep their standing in the top 25 rankings if they can defeat a top 15 ranked opponent.
Up next for the Cowboys tomorrow is a matchup with the Arkansas Razorbacks out of the SEC. OK State’s game against the Razorbacks is their final game of the weekend in the Frisco Classic.
