The Oklahoma State baseball team defeated the Arizona State Sun Devils yesterday in Tempe 18-4, to claim their second victory of the season.
The Oklahoma State baseball program got a much needed victory to finish their season opening road stand in Arizona last weekend. OK State dropped their first series of the season to Grand Canyon, losing two of their first three games. For a team ranked no. 18 to start the season, it didn’t look good for a team also coming off an appearance in the College World Series.
Last night, the Cowboys defeated the no. 25 Arizona State Sun Devils 18-4. Considering the Cowboys only other victory so far this season was 6-5 against the Lopes, that is a great sign for the ball club.
It also looked like the Cowboys’ chances of winning last night were bleak. Their top three pitchers in the rotation did not really get the job done, but the offense was even worse. OK State’s lineup was held to a combined seven runs over the first three games.
However, the offense definitely came alive in last night’s victory. The Pokes scored nearly three times in one night than they had the three previous games. Freshman right-handed pitcher Jonathan Heasley, who entered the night with a 27.00 earned run average, notched a win pitching five shutout innings. The bullpen did not have much work to do after that as well since the offense put up 18 runs.
Catcher Travis Wacker and shortstop Cameron Dobbs registered seven runs batted in combined to spark the offense. First baseman Dustin Williams and outfielder Jon Littell also had big nights with the bat. Williams and Littell had six hits combined and Littell scored four runs.
The Cowboys really broke the game open in the sixth inning, scoring 15 runs in the final four innings of the game. Two ASU errors and 22 hits total will help any team win in a dominating fashion.
ASU had to use nine different pitchers last night. Only three of those nine made it out of the game without an earned run.
It’s nice to see the Cowboy offense come alive and see some of the really positive things we expected out of the team this season.
Up next for the Pokes is a three game series with the Texas State Bobcats starting on Feb. 24 at 4 p.m. CT. Feb. 24 is also the home opener for the Pokes as they take the field in Allie P. Reynolds Stadium for the first time this season.
