The no. 1 ranked Oklahoma State wrestling team dominated the Wyoming Cowboys and Oklahoma Sooners to complete their weekend sweep ahead of NWCA.
The no. 1 Oklahoma State wrestling team was in their final weekend of the regular season this weekend. They faced the Wyoming Cowboys and Oklahoma Sooners both at Gallagher-Iba Arena.
The first matchup against Wyoming came on Friday, Feb. 10, while the Sooners faced the Cowboys today. With the no. 2 Penn State Nittany Lions approaching the Pokes quickly in the rankings, they needed a big weekend to finish the regular season schedule.
OK State started the weekend by defeating Wyoming 32-3. Incredibly enough, that was not the most dominant performance of the weekend from OK State. Both Wyoming and OU were held to just three points in each match.
OK State nearly swept Wyoming in ten matches, winning nine of them. Freshman Nick Piccinninni at 125 pounds won the first match for OK State against Doyle Trout by the score of 8-2. Junior Dean Heil at 141 pounds faced the toughest test as he took on no. 8 ranked Bryce Meredith, but still came up victorious.
Nolan Boyd and Preston Weigel forced falls in their matchups to provide OK State with some bonus points. It was a solid performance all-around from the Cowboys to gain some more momentum heading into the Bedlam match.
OK State did not experience a single defeat in any of their 10 matchups in any weight class until OU’s heavyweight no. 19 Ross Larsen defeated Cowboys’ heavyweight Derek White. Moreover, the Cowboys thoroughly dominated the Sooners through and through to a 37-3 victory over the in-state rivals.
The most impressive performance came from OK State 165 pound and no. 8 ranked Chandler Rogers. He notched a fall over no. 10 ranked Yoanse Mejias to give the Cowboys some bonus points.

Altogether, it was a huge weekend for OK State to prepare for the upcoming NWCA Bowl Series at GIA. The Cowboys will face Penn State in the NWCA Bowl Series on Feb. 19 at 3 p.m. CT. Pokes fan can be sure that head coach John Smith will have the Cowboy wrestling team prepared for the biggest matchup of the season to date.
