Oklahoma State Basketball: Lindy Waters III named Big 12 Newcomer of the Week
Freshman guard Lindy Waters III received the honors of being named Big 12 Newcomer of the Week after shooting perfect from three last week.
No freshman on the Oklahoma State basketball team had a bigger week last week than freshman guard Lindy Waters III. With big efforts in wins over the Oklahoma Sooners and West Virginia Mountaineers, both on the road, Waters III was named Big 12 Newcomer of the Week.
Head coach Brad Underwood has a tremendous freshman class to work with. Moreover, the freshman class gives the Pokes one of the brightest futures of any team in the Big 12.
Maybe the most impressive thing Waters III has done in the last few weeks is the fact that he has not missed a three-pointer in almost three weeks now. He was 6-6 in the last three contest, dating back to the 99-71 Cowboy win over the Arkansas Razorbacks in the Big 12/SEC Challenge.
Waters III’s biggest performance came against OU in a 68-66 victory. He scored 11 points to give the Cowboys the push they needed from the bench scoring to come out victorious. Furthermore, Waters III is the fifth leading scorer on the Cowboy roster, even though he rarely gets the start now.
Junior forward Jeffrey Carroll is a tremendous player for Waters III to learn from and develop under. Carroll is one of the most improved players in the country this season, and seeing his work ethic and flat out scoring ability is great for Waters III.
Overall, Waters III averages 6.4 points per game, 1.0 assists, 2.1 rebounds, and 0.7 steals in 17.7 minutes per game. He also averages better than 50 percent from the field and 45 percent from beyond the three-point line.
He will get another chance to play a key role in a Cowboy victory against the no. 6 Baylor Bears on Feb. 8 at 6 p.m. CT in Stillwater. BU defeated the Pokes the first time around, but that was in Waco. If Waters III played the way he did last week, the Cowboys can expect great contributions from the entire rotation.

With eight freshmen on the roster, OK State’s future in the Big 12 looks really bright. The combination of Waters III with point guard Brandon Averette, forward Cameron McGriff, center Lucas N’Guessan, and guard Thomas Dziagwa, Underwood has a lot to work with in the coming seasons.
