Oklahoma State Wrestling: Cowboys down Iowa State in Ames
The Oklahoma State wrestling team continued their undefeated season by defeating the Iowa State Cyclones 34-3 at Hilton Coliseum in Ames.
The no. 1 Oklahoma State wrestling team had a big weekend defeating the Iowa State Cyclones on Jan. 29 after taking down the no. 7 Missouri Tigers in Columbia on Jan. 27. OK State stayed undefeated after a dominant win in Ames on Sunday, and the Pokes look to stay atop the NCAA top 25 rankings.
OK State moved to a record of 10-0 on the season after the match victory. They’re also 4-0 in the Big 12. Moreover, the Cowboys should have no problem maintaining their no. 1 ranking ahead of the undefeated Penn State Nittany Lions and the Iowa Hawkeyes, who already lost to the Cowboys earlier this season.
Overall, the Cowboys defeated the Cyclones 34-3, which was the sixth time this season that the Pokes defeated an opponent by 30 points or more. It was a more comfortable victory after the Cowboys squeaked out a 20-16 win against Mizzou.
The most impressive streak of any Cowboy wrestler continued on Sunday. The 141-pounds junior Dean Heil continued his match winning streak to 28 straight victories. Heil defeated Cyclones’ wrestler John Meeks 8-5.
Heavyweight senior Austin Schafer sealed the overall victory for the Cowboys with a pin that took a little less than four minutes. The 165-pounder Chandler Rogers was the other Cowboy aside from Schafer to put away the Cyclones in the second half with a fall.
The only points the Cyclones put on the board were from a Marcus Harrington defeat of freshman Derek White at 197-pounds. It was by a narrow 3-2 margin to give the Cyclones their three points.
Anthony Collica got back on track after losing his match against Mizzou, by defeating ISU’s Gabe Moreno 3-0. He is the second highest ranked Cowboy wrestler at no. 2 in his weight class. Heil is ranked no. 1 in his weight class.
Up next for the no.1 undefeated Cowboys is a matchup with Edinboro in Pennsylvania on Feb. 3. That is the first end of back-to-back matchups in the Northeast. The second leg of the back-to-back comes against the Kent State Golden Flashes on Feb. 4 in Ohio. OK State does not move back into Big 12 play until a Feb. 10 matchup with the Wyoming Cowboys back in Stillwater at Gallagher-Iba Arena.
