The Associated Press released their All-Big 12 honors including Oklahoma State Cowboys running back Justice Hill being named Big 12 Newcomer of the Year.

The Associated Press announced the 2016 All-Big 12 Football Honors today. The Oklahoma State Cowboys had three players named First Team All-Big 12, and five players named to Second Team All-Big 12. Furthermore, true freshman running back Justice Hill won Big 12 Newcomer of the Year.

The Oklahoma Sooners led the way with seven First Team All-Big 12 selections. OU head coach Bob Stoops won Big 12 Coach of the Year. Wide receiver Dede Westbrook won Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year.

Hill was not named to either Big 12 all-conference team because of the level of competition from other talented running backs in the conference. Texas running back D’Onta Foreman and OU running back Joe Mixon were both named to the First Team. OU running back Samaje Perine and West Virginia running back Justin Crawford were named Second Team.

More from Pokes Post

Oklahoma State never had a freshman running back rush for as many yards as Hill. He rushed for 1,042 yards and five touchdowns. Hill also posted the sixth-most rushing yards of any freshman running back in the conference’s history.

The Pokes future on offense should revolve around Hill moving forward. With fellow running back Chris Carson gone after the Alamo Bowl, Hill will be the set starter. It will be interesting to see if Hill can take the lead among all FBS freshman in the bowl game. He is currently ranked third and is only 20 yards behind the leader, Mizzou’s Damarea Crockett.

A few notable names that did not get any Big 12 honors are quarterback Mason Rudolph, cornerback Ashton Lampkin, and linebacker Chad Whitener. It might seem like a huge surprise to some Pokes fans to see Rudolph left off the All-Big 12 honors, but the names that made it are very good quarterbacks.OU’s Baker Mayfield and Texas Tech’s Patrick Mahomes were the two quarterbacks given All-Big 12 honors.

Next: Mason Rudolph should stay at Oklahoma State for another year

Getting Big 12 Newcomer of the Year is a tremendous accomplish for both Hill and the Oklahoma State football program.
